He is an entrepreneur and company leader who co-founded Zillow, Hotwire, dot.LA, Pacaso and Supernova and has served as Zillow’s CEO for a decade. In this episode of Office Hours, host Spencer Rascoff talks to Steven Wolfe Pereiro about Encantos, a platform designed to help children learn 21st century skills through storytelling.

Pereira started as an entrepreneur when he was young, selling used comics in New York City where he grew up.

His mother, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, and his father, born and raised in the Bronx, were both teachers who strongly believed in the importance of education.

“One of the key things you’ve learned is that no one can take away your education,” Pereira said.

In developing Encantos, Pereira wanted a platform to help children learn life and educational skills that are not often learned in the classroom. The program includes courses that teach everything from social awareness and compassion to multilingualism and financial literacy.

“We really want to have a playful approach to learning. And it’s actually based on learning science. But the whole idea, ‘hey, we want to bring something to the world that would really resonate,'” Pereira said.

In addition to learning tools, Pereira sees Encantos as a creative platform where artists of all kinds can offer ideas for lessons. Pereira sees this as a way to open the door for color creators, especially to build a portfolio of works.

“If you’re a creator, you have a really hard time getting your stuff into the world, no matter the type of creator,” Pereira said. “But when it comes to space for kids and family, it’s almost impossible to actually publish a book or make an animated series or anything like that.”

Encantos wants to allow creators to publish their work on the platform and own the intellectual property.

Pereira’s path to publishing is unusual. he studied international relations and economic development and expected development work at the World Bank. But an internship through Sponsors for Educational Opportunities (SEO) encouraged him to work with the Blackstone Group and gave him a taste of finance.

“I didn’t know anything about this world of finance. And that’s one of those things where they teach you in SEO that you have to be the first to enter and the last,” Pereira said.

The experience drew Pereiro into the world of technology and media. He has been working in engineering ever since.
