Marvel Studios Releases New Trailer for The Marvels

Marvel Studios is ready to kick off its Phase Five with a cosmic adventure. Marvels stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau with a twist. Whenever the trio used their powers, they switched places.

Candyman director Nia DaCosta helms this installment, written by Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. It is set to debut in November.

Brie Larson

The first trailer for The Marvels has dropped. The film, which is set to be the MCU’s first full-length female team-up, stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan (a.k.a Ms. Marvel). It is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, as well as a tie-in to the currently airing Disney+ series WandaVision and Secret Invasion. It also stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

The film centers on three heroes whose powers converge as they investigate a wormhole that could be linked to Kree supervillain Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton in Captain Marvel and the current Disney+ MCU series. The heroes need to figure out why they keep switching places and how Dar-Benn is involved.

The film was directed by Nia DaCosta, who won critical acclaim for her work on projects such as Room, Short Term 12 and Scott Pilgrim vs. She is also the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

Iman Vellani

As the world’s first female superhero movie, The Marvels is about to bring some much-needed diversity to the big screen. The new trailer, which debuted Friday, offers a look at Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani’s team up as Captain Marvel, Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau.

The teaser also offers a glimpse of the film’s humor and high concept action. The film, which opens in theaters November 10, follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) discovering that her powers are tied to Jersey City superfan and S.A.B.E.R astronaut Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and her estranged niece, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Whenever one of the trio uses a light-based ability, they switch places.

Directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), The Marvels also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Lewis and Park Seo-joon. Megan McDonnell, DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells wrote the film’s screenplay. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige produced. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Mary Livanos serve as executive producers.

Teyonah Parris

Following the teaser trailer in April, Marvel Studios released the full official trailer for The Marvels, which opens on Nov. 10. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film is the official sequel to Captain Marvel 2019 and expands the story of last year’s Disney+ series Ms. Marvel and WandaVision 2021.

The film sees Carol Danvers, a hero introduced in Captain Marvel and a member of the retconned Kree race, taking revenge on the Supreme Intelligence, aka the villain Dar-Benn (played by Zawe Ashton). But unintended consequences send him and his fan-girl sidekicks Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan to another part of the universe, where they tangle with each other thanks to a strange connection.

The trio’s powers – which include absorbing light, seeing light and turning it into physical matter – become entangled and they must work together to figure out what it has to do with stopping Dar-Benn. The cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Gary Lewis, Saagar Shaikh, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur.

Zawe Ashton

British actress, narrator and playwright Zawe Ashton is best known for her roles in the TV series Fresh Meat and Not Safe for Work and her film roles in Dreams of a Life and the Jake Gyllenhaal-led Netflix horror film Velvet Buzzsaw. He has also written several plays and was Young Writer in Residence at Manchester Contact Theatre.

He will join Larson, Parris, and Vellani in The Marvels as Kree leader Dar-Benn, who aims to restore his homeland after a long civil war. As part of her preparation for the role, Ashton was trained to learn how to use Dar-Benn’s war hammer.

Candyman director Nia DaCosta is helming the film, which marks the first MCU feature directed by a Black woman. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Mary Livanos serve as executive producers. The Marvels hits theaters Nov. 10. For more, read EW’s full cover story on the movie. The upcoming film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau/Photon, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn. The film was written by Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells.
