Facebook Users In New York State Eligible For Settlement
If you’re a Facebook user in New York State, you may be eligible to receive a settlement payment. This is a result of a lawsuit that was filed against Facebook regarding its biometric privacy practices.
The lawsuit alleged that Facebook violated Illinois biometric privacy laws by collecting and storing users’ physical characteristics without their consent. The company paid $650 million to settle the class action lawsuit.
Class Members
Illinois Facebook users who filed a claim under the settlement can expect to receive a payment of approximately $400 each. Jay Edelson, a lawyer who opened the lawsuit, said he expects the money to be distributed in January 2020 after legal costs are paid.
Class Members can file a claim by visiting the claims site and entering their Notice ID and Confirmation Code. Requests must be submitted by November 23, 2020.
The Court also approved a Supplemental Notice Program to ensure that all Class Members are informed of their rights under the Settlement.
Class action lawsuits allow people to pursue compensation for their injuries without having to file a separate lawsuit against the company. However, it is important to know that if you join a lawsuit, you are giving up your right to sue for damages individually and your chance to recover compensation.
Procedure for Claims
A class action lawsuit against Facebook over its facial recognition technology was settled last February. The suit alleged that Facebook violated Illinois privacy laws by using its facial tagging feature without consent.
If you are an eligible class member, you may receive a settlement check. To do this, you must submit a claim online or by mail.
You can file your claim online by going to the class action lawsuit website, entering the Notice ID and Confirmation Code that was emailed to you.
Alternatively, you can email your request to the claims administrator.
You can also submit a request through the Facebook app. However, it will be more difficult to get paid this way.
Settlement Amount
The $90 million settlement amount in the class action lawsuit covers Facebook users who visited non-Facebook websites that displayed a Facebook “like” button. The lawsuit alleged that Facebook collected and stored information about their activities without their consent.
For example, the lawsuit alleged that the company’s facial recognition software was used to track users in their absence. He also alleged that it was not adequately protecting their privacy when they were logged in from Facebook.
Those who had previously filed claims in the $650 million settlement were eligible for payments of $397.
To get your payment, you must submit a claim by 22 September 2022. You can do this online or by downloading the claim form and sending it to the settlement administrator.
How to File a Claim
A settlement of a class action lawsuit against Facebook over its infamous “Tag Suggestions” feature has paid off big in the form of free cash. If you’re one of the lucky 1.6 million people who received a $397 check last year, here’s how to claim it.
The request should have been sent to you in a personalized email or via a social media post. It should contain your notice ID and confirmation code.
If you did not receive an email for the entire class, you can still submit your request online. The claims website will ask for your ID, a confirmation code and a photo or proof of purchase. After that, you’ll have to choose a payment method, which will likely be ACH, PayPal, Venmo or prepaid Mastercard. After that, the process should be completed in a few weeks. For the most part, it’s a pretty quick and easy process. But if you have any questions, you can always call the customer service number on the back of your receipt.
