Ask the Expert: Technical SEO for Law Firms

As a leading lawyer marketing agency, we spend a lot of time talking about SEO with legal professionals. Some SEO elements are easier to explain – for example, why good, comprehensive content is important to your website visitors and why it’s a key ranking factor for search engines. Some elements of SEO – like website and server optimizations – however, are more outlandish, but they are just as important to your success.

At Omnizant, we are fortunate to have a diverse group of SEO professionals who love to share their knowledge and distill even the most complex topics for our clients. One of them is Eric Warncke, Director of SEO at Omnizant. For over 15 years, Eric has developed and optimized hundreds of websites and been part of the rapidly evolving SEO landscape.

Below, he addresses some of the most common questions we receive from lawyers about “technical SEO” and what you need to do to ensure your company’s website is optimized for success.

1. What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO refers to website and server optimizations that help search engines like Google crawl and index a website more efficiently. Unlike regular SEO, technical SEO has little to do with writing content or gaining links from third-party websites. Instead, it focuses on more performance-based issues that can negatively affect your site’s rankings; these include (but are not limited to the following):

All of the above, and technical SEO in general, require a deep understanding of how websites work and how search engines crawl and ultimately make sense of those websites.

2. What are the top three things you look at when assessing a site’s technical SEO?

When I’m auditing a site’s technical SEO, the top 3 things I look for are the following:

If you go to Google and do a search with the prefix “site:” (a colon from the site) followed by the URL of the site in question (for example: site:example.com), Google will return a list of all the pages on that site. site that are indexed in Google. If no results are found, it indicates that Google is unable to find and crawl the site.

The site structure must make sense on a website. For example, if you were looking at a law firm’s website, you would expect the home page to link to service pages for the area(s) of law they practice, and those service pages would link to specific case types. For example, a sensible URL structure for a child custody page might look like this:

https://examplefirm.com/family-law/custody/

However, if the site’s URL structure is disorganized and confusing, it will be significantly more difficult for Google to index and crawl the site. An example of a bad site structure for the same URL example above could be:

https://examplefirm.com/45/whatwedo/c45545

You can use the http://www.visualsitemapper.com/ tool to quickly see how any site is structured.

Google Search Console is a free tool for webmasters that tells you how Google’s crawlers interact with your site and how often your site appears for searches and is clicked on. It is a very valuable tool, but the most valuable feature it has is the coverage report. This tool will quickly let you know if any pages on your site contain errors that prevent pages from being indexed correctly. It will also let you know why the pages weren’t indexed so you can quickly fix the cause of the problem. This tool is vital to ensure that 100% of your site is found and indexed correctly in Google.

3. Can attorneys manage their site’s technical SEO alone or is it important to hire professional help?

It is possible for a lawyer to handle the technical SEO of your website on your own, however this requires a great deal of knowledge about how websites, servers and search engines work and interact with each other. We know these subjects are not taught in law school, and realistically it takes months or even years to acquire and put into practice effectively. And of course, like everything related to technology, technical SEO is always evolving. For this reason, we generally recommend attorneys seek professional help from a qualified SEO agency. The advantage of working with an SEO agency is that there is a team of professionals dedicated to your success. By outsourcing this time-consuming task, you can focus on running your business and let us deliver the leads for you.

4. In vetting agencies, what should law firms look for to make sure they’re hiring the right team?

Checking references is still the best way to determine if a digital marketing agency will be a good fit for you. Never be afraid to ask an agency to provide references from similar law firms they have worked for in the past that can attest to their work and communication style. Also, you should look at the agency’s website portfolio to make sure you like the work they’ve done.

5. What resources do you use to keep your technical SEO skills sharp?

There are many places that SEO professionals gather to talk and share information. One such place is Reddit communities such as https://www.reddit.com/r/TechSEO/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/SEO/. There are also discord servers with very active user bases. Slack is another chat program with several great SEO communities like BigSEO and Online Geniuses.

In addition, there are many great sites dedicated to sharing SEO news and educational content, such as Moz’s Whiteboard Fridays series, Search Engine Land, and SEO Roundtable. Lastly, there are several SEO training courses available online that are regularly updated with new material, such as SEMRush Academy, Yoast SEO Academy, Moz Academy (you may have noticed that SEO sites love the word “Academy”), and many others.

6. Thinking ahead to 2023, any trends you think attorneys should be thinking about?

The first thing I tell all my clients to think about going forward is Experience, Authority, and Trustworthiness (E-A-T). Google only wants to show searchers sites that clearly demonstrate that the person writing the content is an expert in their field. To that end, lawyers must do everything they can to demonstrate their knowledge and experience. This should be done by adding comprehensive biographies for all attorneys (and client-facing paralegals and paralegals), adding authorships to the end of blogs hosted on the company website and externally, adding educational materials to the website, guest posting on other websites, appearing on podcasts, making video content, etc. The time spent establishing your company’s professionals as thought leaders in your community will pay off in droves going forward.

Google Business Profile Listing Views and Searches Increase Over 25% in Second Quarter According to Nova Rio SEO and Forsta Research

My SEO Consultant Told Me to “Write for People” – Since then, Google has liked my website

Human-focused content takes your site to the next level

Human-focused content will take your site to the next level

Me: “I think I need to lose a few pounds and get fitter. I think I should start cleaning up my diet and exercise more often.

Friend: “I feel like you live in your 40s. Of course you don’t need to do that anymore. Just go to the nearest supplement store, get a fat burner and some teas that are for this purpose. There are some minor surgical operations which you can do to achieve results within a day.

Me: “Supplements? Surgeries? Dude, they’re literally 5 pounds. I’ve only been working for three months, and that’s more than enough.

Friend: “Three months?! You’re just saying that? Who has time for that? Beach season is coming. We’re in the age of speed. Turn it up, dinosaur.

We tend to prefer shortcuts. It makes sense to you, the reader, doesn’t it? Why should you take a longer route if it takes you to the same place?

Since everything is faster now, these shortcuts have even accelerated. For example, if a SaaS product saves a business 30 minutes a day, it will be sold for several billion dollars.

But every entrepreneur, one day or another, meets their Internet incubator – Google. If you need to reach people out there and showcase your services, you need to do it on Google (about 4.3 billion people use Google.)

But a shortcut is always lucrative, isn’t it?

The thing about Google is that everyone is trying to fool it. For example, let’s compare the searches for the term “SEO tricks” versus “SEO quality content”.

Although these images are not conclusive, it is obvious that more people are looking for how to rank their websites according to SEO tricks.

I have been working on a content marketing strategy that has a duration of 12-24 months. So although it is still early to judge, I tried two methods – Paid vs Organic.

I focused on the product and had an external consultant work on a PPC Google campaign(s). I gave the person (or agency, mainly) a budget with some suggestions of what areas I work in. I promised myself that no matter what happened, I would not return the financing for three months.

The total cost was a little over $6k. I even wrote an article about it.

After those months I noticed that the traction was not as expected. That’s why I intervened and took over.

You: “But wait, you’re not an SEO expert? Isn’t this micro-managing?

Me: “Correct! I’m not an SEO expert. I started looking for one. But I’m not giving that person the whole wheel. It’s my startup, SEO expert or not; I know my startup better than anyone.

So I started improving my website in terms of site speed. Again, this is a no-brainer for me. I don’t need an SEO consultant to tell me that my website needs to be lightning fast. We are in the age of acceleration, remember?

Then I started with my long-term strategy.

Me: “Hello! Thank you for accepting my proposal. I need someone who knows SEO to guide me through this journey. You will be my mentor. However, I will be the executor. I will write all blog articles based on the Keywords I’m Researching I know my customer base, and I’m pretty sure with your advice I’ll be able to hit them right.

He: “Every time. Sounds good to me. Let’s meet weekly for reviews. Ask me questions and I will answer them. I will also review your website and give you some useful improvements. But here is my first advice – write for humans.

You might think, “It goes without saying, write for humans. Why? Are we writing for robots?

But then I looked back two years ago, and I remember hiring a blog writer to populate content on my startup blog.

What was the content? I didn’t care if it was in the same industry. I didn’t have time to check every article. So, if the blog writer wanted to write about business related movies, I wouldn’t say no. But then I personally began to implement the concept – writing for humans.

That’s it. That’s all I needed. I wanted to start writing high quality content but needed some expert guidance. The problem with the world of SEO, especially the freelancing SEO market, is that everyone is trying to push some services like:

Many, and I mean many, of freelancers treat you as an SEO client who would be happy to just follow a few automated steps that will reflect well on your numbers.

For that reason, more than three freelancers I met with rejected the concept of leadership or meetings. My reasoning is that it’s probably just not that easy in terms of quick money (Even though I paid whatever hourly rate they suggested.)

Keep in mind that the website is fairly new, so I wasn’t really expecting anything from PPC or organic growth. First, I started looking in terms of clicks when I had my PPC campaign versus nowadays.

By the way, that stroll in the middle was due to listing on Flippa. I also wrote an article about this (Gosh, I write a lot of articles.)

However, if you look at the PPC result, the clicks were better than in the last three months. They were also slightly better than the three months that followed. So then, the conclusion would be that I should stick with PPC because it obviously results in more clicks, right? Not exactly.

I then looked at another obvious variable – impressions. I want to know if Google started showing the articles I spent time writing (because it’s for humans.)

Then I saw the chart, and I couldn’t have been more sure that this is the perfect advice to give – write for humans.

While some marketing executives don’t consider impressions as crucial as clicks, it does mean that Google is starting to rank my content. They now got the message that I wrote for people.

Do you know the best way to fool the Google algorithm? To follow what is logical.

Then, when I looked at the Semrush data of organic search positions, I was actually proud to focus only on value-added content compared to PPC.

I mean, look at this. My website is a freelance marketplace focused on the business investment industry.

This is far from success when it comes to SEO or the marketing of a startup. However, it is an assurance that writing for audiences that are not yet there could result in healthy traffic.

Write for humans. I’m not an SEO expert and I don’t want to be. I am simply a business consultant trying to explore the world of entrepreneurship. How? With the help of others out there, including SEO experts.

It is not easy to write thirty articles (that’s how many I have written on my website by the way), knowing for sure that most of them will not be read. That is the biggest challenge. The feeling that this time is in vain and could actually produce nothing.

However, like freelancing, meditating, and fishing, SEO writing incorporated with patience could be the deal-breaker.

How-To Guide: Create a sustainable, high-performing SEO and content strategy

Search Engine » SEO » Content » How-to: Create a sustainable, actionable SEO and content strategy

Many customers ask. They search for the best prices, find new recipes, find travel options, find doctors and new restaurants and bike routes and use search engines more than any other channel to do it. Marketers of all lines know this, which may be the reason why, on average, marketers are investing more in resources and SEO in 2022.

What marketers do not always know, especially those of us who are responsible for SEO and content creation, are what will be searched for by customers and are valued highly enough by the search engine algorithm to get a high ranking. All the requirements must be met for your content to successfully reach the right people, and it is not an easy task.

To have the best opportunity, sellers should:

And that’s just scratching the surface. Fortunately, organic search leaves a data-rich path that can be leveraged to support a sustainable, high-performing SEO and content strategy. Winning the top positions is never guaranteed, but with the right information, traders can tip the scales in their favor.

A sustainable, high-performing SEO and content strategy starts with research

Content alone does not drive traffic – after all, less than 10% of all content generates any traffic at all – and SEO by itself does not drive conversions. In practice, getting meaningful traffic from organic search requires a systematic SEO and content strategy, its research base.

In order to get the most out of the available data around content, search activity and website traffic, SEO and content strategy should calculate the search information at four key points in a repetitive loop:

Establish a baseline for website performance

To create a targeted SEO and content strategy, it is important to first understand how your site performs in organic search. This effort should include both internal audit and technical analysis. The audits will help identify and prioritize opportunities and provide a basis for measuring the impact of the program over time.

From an organic search perspective, content analysis should show a comprehensive list of keywords – and by extension, pages – that help a website or domain rank in a search engine. Existing high-ranking content provides an expected model for new content. Analyze topics, elements and content structure to identify patterns that can be leveraged into a larger strategy. Important domain names and pages can represent another opportunity for quick access if the content can be optimized to achieve a higher ranking.

Search algorithms do it automatically. In addition to keywords, they rely on technical signals found in the site and page architecture to help them optimize the content on the page and determine its relevance to the target audience. A technical SEO review uncovers technical issues and opportunities and helps ensure that the site and page can be optimized to meet best practices. This can include on-page elements such as H1 and H2 tags, site elements such as page layout and mobile-friendliness, and opportunities to improve content, for example, by adding links to authoritative content.

Identify topic opportunities, gauge demand and benchmark competitors

The majority of the opportunity is often out of the available resources. Qualified, targeted audiences are rewarded with countless search results every day. In fact, SEO is responsible for over 53% of web traffic. Those searches contain a wealth of intelligence about keywords, pages, domains, and competitors that rank high and win the most clicks.

A targeted SEO and content strategy should identify and analyze the winners in the market to eliminate them.

Start by understanding what topics people are searching for and what keywords and phrases they use to search. Find out which data topics you can edit. The goal here is to get relevant traffic that can convert. A site that sells zebra-print hair ties and accessories will want to rank high for searches like “animal print head”.

Review the content that ranks highest for your desired search results. It is important to understand that in the world of search, these are your competitors, and they may not be the same as your competitors. The San Diego Zoo may not be a business competitor, but if they’re high on “animal print headband,” they’re looking for your competitor. Determine which competitor pages and keywords are well positioned and incorporate that into your content strategy.

Create and optimize content

All research you conduct will be used to create and improve content. Decide what is important to your business, then plan against your initial research and factor in the information gained from topic, keyword and competitor analysis to create a content search strategy.

More importantly, the content’s ability to improve depends not only on the content but the format. A search engine results page (SERP) is a collection of various types of results, from traditional web listings to sites to videos and images, quick answers, shopping carts and more. With the right tools, you can determine not only what topics and keywords will help you rank but what type of content is best suited to rank high.

Track, measure and refine content strategy and SEO

For the sake of simplicity, we are discussing the cycle of research, content creation and optimization as a linear process, but in practice, it is a loop. Research is not a one-and-done task but must be ongoing. Dynamic search engines and search algorithms are constantly changing to improve the quality of results and adapt to new technologies.

The first step created at the beginning of the SEO and internal efforts provides a system to track and measure the ongoing performance. How much has the site’s voice segment grown or declined? What pages have been edited or updated instead? What drove those improvements, and can they be extended to other practices? What new words have emerged, and which ones have remained in search interest?

Effective performance measurement provides the insights needed for continuous, targeted content creation and optimization.

SEO Agencies Reveal Biggest SEO Trends in 2023 [DesignRush QuickSights]

The global SEO market is expected to reach $122.11 billion in 2028. DesignRush interviewed SEO experts to identify trends for 2023.

, /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ – According to BrightLocal, in 2020, 93% of US consumers used online search to find businesses and service providers. 34% were searching daily, up from 27% in 2018. This coincides with the growth of the global SEO market, which is forecast to reach $122.11 billion in 2028 at a 9.6% CAGR, as reported on Research and Markets.

DesignRush, a B2B marketplace that connects businesses with agencies, has leveraged its 16,000-strong network for quick insights – or “QuickSights” – on the top SEO trends companies should pay attention to in 2023.

SEOValley CEO and Founder Shabir MS notes that brands should optimize their content for conversational questions to personalize the browsing experience of users.

“SEO is still the most effective digital marketing strategy and search queries will play an important role in 2023 as they help Google improve the user’s search experience,” said Shabir. “To optimize for this situation, tailor your content to your audience and make sure you prioritize natural language.”

According to Houston Barnett-Gearhart, SEO director at Success, in 2023, businesses should focus on owned media while prioritizing helpful content.

“If 2022 taught us anything, it’s that you can’t build your business on someone else’s platform,” Barnett-Gearhart said. “In 2023, focus on improving proprietary media. Content that meets users where they are with the information they need not only builds brand power – it also positions your site to benefit from updates Google’s latest algorithm, which prioritizes content that is helpful to the user.”

According to Ronnie Cane, director at 18 Growth, businesses should re-evaluate their affiliate marketing strategy and focus on better internal links.

“Effective connectivity, in 2023, will require a much bigger focus than just having backlinks,” Cane said. “Content links are a ‘go there’ thumbprint to Google and an important signal that, when shown great content, will keep reminding them it’s good. Businesses shouldn’t look to plugins or tools to do this not, though. Integration should be done by hand, well, and often.”

4) POSITION ON VALUE OF THINGS OVER WAYS

Eric M. Rudolphe, Mobile Web Expert and founder, points out the growing importance of quality content not only to satisfy the audience but also to improve search engine ranking.

“With backlinks becoming less effective, as reported by Google, content will continue to increase in dominance, especially content that is well written, fresh and informative,” said Rudolphe. “One way that Google RankBrain improves is by determining the value of the site because of the value of its content and reducing its value on irrelevant links. Therefore, to create content that people will read and share. Find out what your users are looking for. What kind of content will meet their needs.”

Htmull Owner and Founder James Mull shared that there will be a renewed focus on audience size when it comes to content creation.

“We believe publishing people-first content will be important in 2023,” Mull said. “Creating interesting content that users will find useful and want to share is one of the fastest ways to grow your audience. We recommend using keyword tools like SEMRUSH or MOZ to analyze the are relevant to your industry and provide content that people want to see. However, it is important to provide quality content and publish it quickly as the search environment can change daily.”

“In 2023, SEO will continue to be an important part of advertising with artificial intelligence being one of the biggest trends,” said Empie. “Over 80% of companies already rely on some form of AI technology to make smarter decisions based on real-time data and monitor their web analytics using these tools too!”

This is how Search Engine Land’s own Barry Schwartz described Slawski in 2020.

After Slawski suffered a stroke, Schwartz created a tribute site: billslawski.com. Schwartz asked SEOs for stories about how Slawski had helped them in their career. And they sure did.

The site is packed with hundreds of stories and memories, posted almost daily, from December 15, 2020 to May 10, 2021.

One such story from Slawski himself, who updated the community on his status:

Thank you to everyone who took a moment to write or send something to me while I was in the hospital. I had a small brain clot and am now taking aspirin as a blood thinner. The clot caused a stroke, which had the effect of unbalancing my core, making it difficult for me to walk and worrying about falling. I was in hospitals for 2 months going through 3 hours of rehab a day. A lot of that was learning how to use a rollator and then a cane to help me get around. When I was discharged, I had begun to walk without assistance. At home, he spent much more time walking without a walker or cane. I’m a little clumsier than before, but I can walk pretty well. I ride a stationary bike 40 minutes a day and keep up with walking as well. The stroke did not affect my ability to think, speak or do SEO. Speech therapists reviewed that for me, giving me logic puzzles to solve to make sure I could. They were puzzles that could have fit on spreadsheets, and for someone used to doing site audits they just weren’t very challenging—they kept saying they needed more advanced books.

A shout out to my team at Go Fish Digital who sent me plants to look at, and to several local SEOs who sent me succulents and a couple of Doordash giveaways so I could order breakfasts directly from them. I managed to keep my connection to Twitter running during that time, and a couple of people who were locals ended up helping me make sure I got home and took care of some issues with the DMV and paying my bills while I was in Hospital. . After 2 months away from a computer, it took me a few tries to write and send emails. I have already written about a few patents and now I speak weekly about SEO. I accepted a talk this week on the future of SEO, 9 years after Penguin, at Twitter Spaces. You have to learn to use that first. I look forward to speaking with everyone soon. Thanks for setting up this website, Barry. It really has been nice to see a new post every day as I continue to work on relearning to walk.

Community reaction

We are still in shock and processing this devastating loss.

News of Slawski’s passing spread quickly on Twitter and by word of mouth. Here’s just a small sample of the reactions from the search community, upon learning of Slawski’s death.

Bill was a shining beacon for all those who wanted to understand the often complicated search patents. And SEO in general. I knew and appreciated his kindness and consideration. This is a terrible loss. Thoughts to your family, friends and co-workers. We will miss you, Bill. https://t.co/yXRzVQEAvj

Too sad. 😢 He was such a smart and generous man. A true SEO legend. We will all miss him tremendously.

R.I.P. Bill. He had a huge influence on me, and I’m grateful that he came to see me speak that time as I built a large part of my presentation as a tribute to the ways of thinking I learned from him. I’m sorry to hear that.

Very sad. I have known Bill for over 20 years. He sent me a note recently when he found out that my new headquarters was in San Diego and that I have to go there in a couple of weeks. I really valued our long friendship and great contribution to the industry. R.I.P. Bill.

I JUST spoke to you a couple of weeks ago about our meeting here in San Diego. He seemed fine and in a good mood.

I had the honor of calling Bill a friend. An incredible loss on a personal and professional level. My deepest condolences.

Condolences to the entire family and our entire industry. Bill had such a unique take on SEO that it made everyone stop and reconsider what we thought we knew. He will be missed.

Few people have had as big an impact on the SEO industry as @bill_slawski. The place won’t feel the same without it.

I am speechless…speechless! My dear friend, mon ami, my confidante in SEO, patents, algorithms, flowers, sunsets, sunrises, my chat friend is gone? We will miss you Bill, R.I.P.❤️

Bill brought a lot of knowledge and love to the SEO community. Your kind spirit and generosity will be sorely missed.

This is very sad news, thoughts to his family. And our industry is losing a very valuable person, who passed on so much knowledge to our great SEO community around the world. Bill will leave a very big void. Thanks for your generosity!

Rest in peace Bill. We all miss you.
