Most university football teams have innovative coaches, dynamic players, obsessive graduates and… WMT digital.

If you are only as good as your website and app, then these teams are more than good. WMT is an agnostic technology integrator that powers content, broadcasts, subscriptions, ticketing, marketing and storytelling across college football digital platforms. And if there’s ever a time when their IT department can’t take a minute’s break, it’s now—college football season.

Few people know that WMT is the basis of LSU Gold, Hogs+, Clemson+ and about 40 other websites, applications and “pluses”. When Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked last week on National Signing Day about NIL and replied, “We built this program in the Name, Image, and Likeness of God,” the Tiger fanbase knew they could go straight to the video courtesy of WMT. Their tentacles are everywhere.

The company that used to be a one-man gang in Miami built a gameday app for Ohio State, a single-screen recruiting platform for Clemson, an all-in-one app for San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, and is ready to try anything and everything else.

“We will build something new depending on the circumstances, which has been very warmly received, especially in the collegiate sports industry over the last two or three years,” says Chad Cleveland, WMT’s chief operating officer. “It’s like their minds opened up, ‘Oh wow, I have options, we can do things and we can work with WMT.’

On a typical university athletics website, Sport & Story will provide content, a company called REVELxp will distribute ready-made data, and WePlayed will create the most interesting moments based on artificial intelligence. But they are all fed together across different websites through WMT, which has created an unparalleled collegiate digital ecosystem.

The one who should take a bow above all else is Andres Focil, the founder and managing director of WMT, who spawned this business on a whim. When the Miami Heat had their big three of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, Focil was tasked with helping his alma mater, the University of Miami, get out of the back pages. At the time, every Google search related to sports in Miami came up with Miami Heat or Miami Dolphins, so Focil went to work.

With his knowledge of coding, he was able to refine the school’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to the point where U of M was ranked at the top of the page ahead of LeBron. This turned Focil into a boy prodigy and quickly gained a reputation as someone who could, for lack of a better word, “disrupt”.

A few years later, Focil received a cold call from the Arkansas athletic department whose question was roughly equivalent to, “Hey, what you did in Miami was pretty cool – could you help us with that?” And while you’re at it, could you improve our digital platform?

Focil stepped in at a time when the digital space was cluttered with providers like Sidearm Sports, CBS Interactive and PrestoSports. But what stood out was its commitment to SEO, which he felt would negatively impact the school’s recruiting, ticket sales, and promoters’ overall profile.

He wasn’t wrong. Around 2020, he connected with Cleveland, who was senior vice president of marketing and technology at Tailgate Guys—which, among other things, was trying to create an online store to handle bookings for events and other venues. He eventually joined WMT, working with Focil on a sports guest booking platform that would be integrated into Focil’s websites and app. Before you knew it, WMT actually became a native multi-level integrator for content, merchandise, recruiting, streaming, and so on.

“So it started with, ‘Hey, let’s help Miami improve from an SEO perspective,’ and now we’re building large-scale e-commerce platforms that generate millions of dollars in revenue,” says Cleveland. “And that’s really the story of what WMT is.”

Focil’s integration with Clemson around the 2020 pandemic added some mystery to him. As Swinney was unable to recruit in person due to Covid-19, Focil implemented a single-screen platform for the coach so that in one virtual call, Swinney could review the recruiter’s tape, give him a simulated tour of campus – everything but slap recruit from the back.

If that gave Clemson an unfair advantage, that was it. This was the way Focil and WMT operated. He soon created a stadium app for Ohio State called Gameday mode. This meant that anyone who came to Horse Shoe in Columbus could access concessions, parking lots, information about the game, and everything that was unique to the place.

“It’s more about how we can increase revenue, how we can help you make money on a digital platform,” says Focil. “How can we stimulate recruitment, how it can affect various aspects of your company as a whole. And to help you better understand your fans to better engage them and give them better storytelling, and ultimately be able to deliver a better product from a digital perspective.”

In 2022, WMT went a step further with the introduction of the Snapdragon Stadium app. Given that the new Mission Valley Stadium not only houses the state of San Diego, but also professional teams such as the San Diego Legion (rugby union) and San Diego Wave FC, the application is more extensive – from tickets to parking, concessions, broadcasting , information about matches and how to use the app during the halftime light show.

The company is always scheming. Last year, they powered Collegiate Sports Connect, a sort of LinkedIn sports niche that connects college sports associates. CS Connect reportedly has over 7,000 users and creates jobs, revenue and more information about Focil.

Bowling games in 2022 only complete WMT’s portfolio, given that app and website traffic will be exponentially higher during Clemson’s Capital One Orange Bowl performance or Arkansas’ AutoZone Liberty Bowl performance or LSU’s Vrbo Citrus Bowl performance.

Focil may be collaborating with the IT department these gaming days… or developing new SEO strategies… or developing the latest iterations of WMT for 2023.

“Because he’s an engineer by trade,” says Cleveland. “He’s still coding today and doing all these things. If you’ve seen his office, it’s like he’s building a spaceship or something.”

5 times you will need an SEO expert in 2023

There are many times during the life cycle of your website that you will need an SEO expert.

When it doesn’t, however, something has gone terribly wrong. The website may never recover and may experience a long-term drop in traffic.

If you are going to make significant changes to your website, make sure you have the guidance of an experienced SEO throughout the process. A website design agency may not have the necessary experience.

2. Deep analysis

Even if you tick all the boxes on an SEO checklist, there may be something sinister lurking behind the scenes on your website that is causing your traffic to drop. Only a deep audit can uncover something like this.

It is common for site owners to focus only on the top performing pages. But this is only a small representation of the quality of your website. The other 80% of web pages on your site could be hurting your overall quality and relevance, thus affecting your traffic.

There have been many great articles that have exposed Local Services Ads’ relentless pursuit of spam and fake reviews. There is one on Search Engine Roundtable about fake reviews and another on Search Engine Land where Len Raleigh talked about site spam, reviews, names and ads.

I recently learned from a client that the dark hole goes a little deeper than just being misled by sites and reviews.

This discovery will make those in the local Senior space remember what was seen in the personal injury and garage door spaces.

Fighting spam in local search

Over the past two years, site spam and review spam have been on the rise.

There were also large lead generation networks that would litter an area with fake profiles, support reviews and convert and sell those items to merchants – usually the same merchants they had placed.

Some people in the local SEO space got together and helped reduce that amount of spam. And finally, Google took some action.

While that spam is still around in some form to this day, it seems they’ve moved into another area where Google isn’t good – or they don’t want to actively police it to do.

As fellow digital marketer and SEO expert Dennis Yu told me:

Spam and fake reviews on Google’s Local Service Ads

Local Service Ads (LSAs) allow consumers to find companies that Google feels they can trust because they’ve passed multiple checks on personnel backgrounds, licenses and insurance, among other things.

The big problem here is “trust,” which seems easy to manufacture and undo.

We need to know how the LSA works to understand where the issues come in.

The LSA was supposed to be a great way to fight spam, but now it looks like it’s ready for the dark side.

Illustrating the issue

The two companies highlighted in the screenshot both serve Pasadena – and appear to be owned by the same person (based on the following table).

The question? That would be a breach of LSA policies.

I delved deeper into my source and saw that many companies in the area were owned by the same people.

The above table shows that the same actors have multiple entities in local service announcements. To uncover this, a third party looked at licensed owners of California garage door companies. These companies were in the LSA at the time of data collection.

Below is the same list of companies with their associated LSAs. (At the time of writing, three have been removed from the LSA.)

* Is an affiliated entity with overlapping ownership identified through the California State Contractors Licensing Board (CSLB).

Based on third party research, the above companies have multiple entities – some of which are also in the LSA.

There is a pattern of creating entities to join the LSA and only for that. We managed to remove spam LSA entries by looking at the fake entitlements behind them. (More on why that’s important later.)

So now we have multiple entities. What to do next? What about getting fake reviews?

As pointedly stated in Raleigh’s article, it is extremely easy and cheap to find “verified” LSA reviews.

Side note: LSA’s “verified” review is not verified per se. A unique link is generated after a job is completed, which you can send to an LSA customer, but you can give out the generic LSA review link and get reviews – from anyone. Even those who left a Google Business Profile (GBP) review. It is not very reliable and can be played easily.

So how do these entities get fake unpurchased reviews? It is quite simple.

How the Local Services Ads arbitrage works

The LSA arbitrage goes something like this:

Google has no knowledge or quality control of subcontracting between the entities it approves and the external entities that ultimately run the jobs. (To be fair, this might be hard to detect right now, but some mechanisms could be put in place to detect it.)

That said, Google says they investigate allegations of LSA subcontracting and enforce as appropriate, so report it if you see it.

When I asked our contact at LSA about this, I received the following statement from a Google spokesperson:

“We have strict policies in place for Local Services Ads to protect people and advertisers from abuse and fraud across the industry. We are committed to fighting fake and revised content in local ads and listings and are investing significantly in new enforcement systems that help protect both users and providers from abuse.”

In another meeting, I was informed that this is going up to the highest levels in the LSA and also to Google Legal, so there may be some policy changes here.

Why is this LSA arbitrage a warning sign? 

There was a particular cycle when the personal injury and garage door spam started.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ has has been raised in major states / metros, such as California, New York, Florida, and Texas.

​​​​​​They would stay in those metros for about six months and then start spreading across the U.S. Based on reports, these are the metros they are in now.

Actions we can take

Getting Google to take this seriously seems like moving a mountain and they have a lot of legal hoops to jump through. They may also be disincentivized to act simply because the “proof” is difficult to find scalable. And, let’s be honest with ourselves, this is a monetization platform.

When it comes to making money, however, if the bad actors are weeded out then good merchants need to get as much of a lead as they can. I have several customers with a $100,000+ weekly budget!

Here are some ways search marketers can take action.

We should have seen this coming

The Local Services Ads platform is still relatively young.

Marketers should have seen this coming. Google should also have given all their experience with spam and arbitrage on Google Ads.

Google can do better. Hopefully they can take this as a call to action to step up and do the right thing, no matter how hard it is.

It will cost money in infrastructure and lost advertising revenue, but the upside is that real buyers will spend money on real leads. Ultimately consumers will trust the platform more. That’s a win-win in my book!
